John Heartfield

Whilst work is a maelstrom, life in the Worm household is very cheery at the moment, as my german hausfrau is clucking around the place all happy that her football playing countrymen wiped the floor with Australia last night. All this german-ness reminded me to post about an artist that I have been finding out a bit about over this last week, John Heartfield, or Helmut Herzfeld to his parents. Heartfield was a german from the Dada school, with strong communist leanings who used his art to comment on his mistrust of Hitler and the Nazis, moving to England in 1938 before relocating to communist East Germany after the war. I saw an exhibition of his at Tate Britain a few years ago and thought it very interesting to see the work of a chap who is relatively little known, yet seems to have had a strongly graphic cut-and-paste style that may have had quite an influence on artists down the years, including Peter Blake, Terry Gilliam, Jamie Reid and Banksy.

That first one is very Banksy.

I thought of Terry Gilliam.

Ta for the reminder. I'm now trying to remember the context in which I saw that last image. One of the perils of having a mind like an old attic.

I think he looks a bit like David Cameron in that last one...

I agree worm, a dead ringer for Cameron (though perhaps not a wringer.. as looks like he's about to chop up a live chicken). Curiously fascinating..
