For Brit...

This one's for Brit, who is absolutely adamant that youth culture is as good and fun as ever (for young people). Please watch the short instructional video below (especially around the 25 second mark) - 20 years ago, that's what the atmosphere in clubs all over the country used to be like every night of the week. I haven't seen anything remotely like that since at least 2001.
Makes me want to go out and go mental

  1. Makes me want to go to a decent restaurant, have a bottle of the second least expensive red, and then home for a nice early night.

You've got to let it go, Worm, you'll be a married man next week. The kids are alright, you're just not one of them anymore...

  2. PS. I note that you put the Fall about ten years after Gaw does, who is about ten years older than you. For myself, I put it in Autumn 1998, when the Thekla Saturday indie night jumped the shark.

  3. Woah, my epilepsy just kicked in again. So does Kevin and Perry go Large (2000) shows the last gasp of this culture? I put the Fall at 1982, when The Jam and The Clash started splitting up.

  4. oooh Kevin and Perry go large...an elegiac masterpiece of modern cinema!!!

I think that film possibly signalled the commercial nadir of this culture for sure

and Brit, I have let my clubbing days go - standing around in a club all night bores me to death. "eee....you can't even 'ear yerself think with all that dur dur dur technoid music"

Nowadays it's all about the wild and reckless dinner party scene

  5. Brit, you've fallen into a trap. That second least expensive bottle of red is the worst value wine in the house. Me and the missus refer to it as the Rule of Gavin after a friend of mine who established it.

  6. Yes I heard that the other day from someone. From now on, the absolute least expensive it is!

  7. ..and Brit, make sure you force them to pour a little bit into a glass to taste if it's corked first - even though it has a metal screw-top. It marks you out as a true connoisseur.

  8. Oh God they usually force that excrutiating bit of panto on you. I loathe it.

  9. Nowadays there's no need to go out to go mental - just keep sitting in front of your computer...
