...not saying I liked many of them (I HATED the Levellers), just that I can imagine plenty of kids who are 20 now who were 5 or 6 at the time and wouldn't know anything about this stuff. I'm sure Ned's Atomic Dustbin must be due a comeback by now
The great thing about music is it seems to be repeatedly forgotten and rediscovered. I've lived through three mod revivals at least!
ReplyDeleteThe Charlatans are still great! Massively underrated (them and Supergrass).
ReplyDeleteI assume Nirvana are still popular with depressed youths?
yes I think Nirvana are in the 'proper classic' category and as such can never now go out of fashion -they play 'smells like teen spirit' on radio one all the time (although none of their other tracks for some reason)
ReplyDeleteSupergrass were great, I met them once at a photoshoot as they were launching their first album and they were pretty wild!!
some other ones to add to my list include Morcheeba, Dodgy, Kula Shaker, Sneaker Pimps and, more recently The Strokes
Kula Shaker - oh dear, cringe. Mansun in the same bracket.
ReplyDeleteThe Strokes' first two albums were great - bloody hell that's only a couple of years ago, surely?
yes Kula Shaker...any spuriously 'mystical' band led by a bloke called Crispian should rightly be consigned to the dustbin of history and spat on repeatedly
ReplyDeleteyeah strokes was only a "couple" of years ago (nearly 9 now) but do you think a 20 year old would know anything about them? They would have been 11 at the time their big album hit the conciousness of twenty and 30 somethings, and they're hardly in the spotlight...
When's the next mod revival? I think one's due. Or did I miss it?
ReplyDeletethere's one every 18 months or so I think. Graceland era Paul Simon is the big influence at the moment
ReplyDeleteYeah, Vampire Weekend are very Graceland.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I usually pitch my cultural references fifty years or more back. It's depressing to get blank looks for references to the day before yesterday.
ReplyDelete...Too true Kevin, thats exactly what I was telling Zig & Zag just last week
